| Here is our monthly review of the best business research sites we've come across: | |
SITE: Amazon: Business Research Bestsellers URLs: CATEGORY: Reference PURPOSE: Amazon allows its users to view the top-selling books for hundreds of niche subject areas. The above URLs link directly to best-sellers in online searching, marketing research, and corporate libraries. FEE/FREE: FREE SOURCE CHECK: Amazon.com is the creator of these best-selling lists. OUR VIEW: We only recently discovered the ability to drill down so narrowly in Amazon’s listing of best-selling books, and we think it can serve as a great way to find out what the hottest and most popular books are in whatever business (or any other) topic you are researching. We were also very pleased to discover that we could not just browse niche categories but conduct a keyword search restricted just to that category as well. Consider this site if you want to discover what the biggest selling books are for almost any narrow niche topic you’re researching. |

SITE: Annual Reports Service URL: www.investorcalendar.com/research/index.asp CATEGORY: Company Information PURPOSE: Browse or search for annual reports of 3,000 North American and European firms, and receive the reports by mail or electronically, at no cost. FEE/FREE: FREE SOURCE CHECK: The Annual Reports Service is a service of PrecisionIR Group, an investor services firm that provides financial information, such as earnings reports, prospectuses, email alerts, and so on. The firm, which is headquartered in Richmond, Va., makes its Annual Reports Service available on various third parties on the web. OUR VIEW: It’s always nice to come across a fast, easy way to order free annual reports. While PrecisionIR makes its service available on various third parties, we liked this one as the reports are nicely separated into two major categories: North American and European companies. After making a selection, you can then browse and search by other criteria, such as industry, ticker, company name, and exchange. Note that only a selection of firms participate in this free annual report service. Also be cautioned that when you submit your order, you are permitting PrecisionIR “to transfer your data to the provider of the annual report/s you have selected,” which could mean getting unsolicited information from those firms. Consider this site if you want to quickly obtain a free annual report from a public company. |

SITE: IngentaConnect CATEGORY: Academic Journals PURPOSE: IngentaConnect permits anyone to conduct a full-text search on more than 24 million journal articles and book chapters, sourced from 30,000 academic and scholarly publishers. FEE/FREE: FREE (articles themselves are mostly fee-based) SOURCE CHECK: IngentaConnect is a product of Ingenta, a U.K.-based firm founded in 1998 that provides technology services to publishers and is well-known in the scholarly publishing arena. OUR VIEW: On this site, you can find articles on business topics ranging from management theories to globalization, marketing, HR, and much more. Although IngentaConnect does not provide the actual full text of the articles in its database at no charge, it is a very valuable free web gateway for locating the existence of relevant journal articles and book chapters. After you find one, you can then order the full document on a pay-per-view basis or check nearby libraries to see if any own it or subscribe. The site provides full advanced searching and is a reliable and well-known provider of academic literature. Consider this site when you want to find academic literature on whatever topic you are currently researching. |

SITE: INTUTE URL: www.intute.ac.uk/socialsciences/business CATEGORY: Link Site/Reference Information PURPOSE: A listing and links to selected quality business-related resources on the web, organized in more than 40 topic areas, ranging from accounting and advertising to strategic management. The entire INTUTE site, which covers the entire social science field, lists more than 120,000 links. FEE/FREE: FREE SOURCE CHECK: INTUTE is a creation of a network of universities and partners located in the U.K. The specific editors for the business management section are two U.K. professionals: Angela Joyce of the Institute for Learning and Research Technology (ILRT), University of Bristol, and Pete Maggs, liaison librarian (Humanities & Social Sciences), University of Newcastle upon Tyne. OUR VIEW: There are lots of web directories, ranging from Yahoo! to Librarian’s Index to the Internet, but it’s always good to come upon a new one that is high-quality and timely and that covers business topics. Not only does INTUTE permit you to browse selected links in categories, but you can also conduct a keyword search, for the entire INTUTE collection, or limited to a major subject area, such as business. An advanced search page allows users to focus a search just for particular types of resources (e.g., associations, data sets, and maps) as well as to limit a search just to words in the resource’s title, description, or keyword description. Consider this site if you want to find substantive and recommended sites on the web on a business or virtually any other social science topic area. |

SITES: PRWeb: Newspad URL: www.newspad.com CATEGORY: Advertising Information/Search Engines PURPOSE: This is a search engine that indexes thousands of press releases, release attachments, and podcasts sent out by PRWeb. FEE/FREE: FREE SOURCE CHECK: Newspad is a creation of PRWeb, of Ferndale, Wash. PRWeb was founded in 1997 to help small businesses use the internet to communicate their news to the public, and it has represented about 40,000 firms. PRWeb is owned by Vocus. OUR VIEW: While the collection of press releases is not comprehensive by any means, and we think the ranking of results is a bit odd and inconsistent, we do like this site as a free way to quickly locate press releases by keywords. It would be particularly useful for locating public communications from small businesses. Note that entering multiple words into the search engine causes Newspad to default to an OR operator, but you can enter AND between words if you want to search that way, and you can use quotation marks to search for phrases. Consider this site if you want to find press releases from thousands of small firms, as well as some larger ones as well. |
